Helpful Information

What is a Bed and Breakfast?

Guest rooms usually in a private home which includes breakfast in the price of lodging.

Rick Steves puts it rather well and he says “B&B’s are not hotels. Think of your hosts as friendly acquaintances who have invited you to stay in their home, rather than someone you are paying to wait on you.”

Why are your two B&B rooms so different in size and price?

We initially had only one room (the upstairs room) available for B&B purposes, but a single unit did not meet the requirements set out by the Trip Advisor website and they would not list us. So we decided to offer the downstairs room for B&B as well. It is smaller than the upstairs room and without the same facilities which is why it has a different rate.

Do you have WiFi and mobile/cell phone coverage?

We have complimentary WiFi available.  We have mobile/cell phone coverage but it is not assured. This depends entirely on your provider.

At what time may I check in and at what time do I have to check out?

Check in is at any time after 4.00pm on your day of arrival.  Please let us know if you are going to arrive later than 7.00pm. Entry before 4.00pm cannot be guaranteed because we need that time to undertake housework, shop for food supplies, or to meet appointments. Check out is by 10.30am on your day of departure.

Do you provide evening meals?

We are unable to provide dinner but are happy to advise guests about where to find something to eat. The nearest places are the pretty highland villages of Ballater and Braemar some eight miles along the A93 from our home. We are fairly equidistant between the two.

Do you have disabled access?

Whilst all are welcome at Copper Beech unfortunately the house may be unsuitable for those with mobility issues because there are steps at the front door. One letting room is upstairs and the other is quite small.

Do you allow smoking and do you allow dogs?

We do not permit smoking inside the house. We do not consent to dogs because we share our home with Lulu our rescue cat. In her early years she was attacked by a dog and bears the physical and mental scars to this day.

Does your home have air conditioning?

Very few homes in the United Kingdom as a whole have air conditioning.

Can I put items in your fridge for storage?

Yes, of course.

Will you wash some clothes for me?

Yes, we can wash and dry some clothes for you, although this will be done entirely at your own risk. There will be no charge for this service, but a donation to the Deeside Branch of Cats Protection would be appreciated. To facilitate the process of washing and drying clothes please speak with us about this as soon as you have checked in.

Are midges a problem in the Royal Deeside area?

There are more than 30 species of midge in Scotland but it is the female Culicoides impunctatus variety that causes torment. Whilst there are biting insects in this region of Scotland, they are by no means as vicious as those elsewhere in the country. In fact Queen Victoria and Prince Albert chose to purchase nearby Balmoral Castle because it did not have the midge problem they experienced in other areas of Scotland.

How do I reach you by public transport?

There is a bus service which runs from Aberdeen through Ballater and Crathie and on to Braemar. Whilst we welcome green travellers, getting to many of the popular sites in the Highlands from Crathie by the use of public transport is difficult. The easiest railway station to reach from here is Aberdeen, but you will have to travel there by bus. The railway line between Aberdeen and Ballater no longer exists.

I’m a light sleeper, how close to the main road are you?

Copper Beech is close to the main road (A93) and some traffic noise is heard throughout the day and night. However, trees and another property stand between us and the road and as a result our home is fairly well screened from the noise of traffic. As you will see from our website photographs, Velux windows are installed above the bed in the upstairs B&B room and there may be some unavoidable noise from these if heavy rain should fall onto the glass. The room was converted from unused roof space into a bedroom by the previous owner of Copper Beech and not by us. We simply refurbished what was already there.

Should I leave you a tip?

The custom of tipping is not as common in the UK as it is in the USA and other parts of the world and it is not necessary for you to leave us a tip or a hostess gift. Our small business is family run and we do not employ any staff. However if you are happy with the standard of service you have received and wish to show your appreciation then we ask for a donation to the Deeside Branch of Cats Protection which we support through voluntary work. A collection box is situated in the hallway. Otherwise just recommend us to your family and friends.

Similarly if you are unhappy with any aspect of your stay please let us know at the time and we shall do everything we can to rectify the problem.
