What is a Bed and Breakfast?
Guest rooms usually in a private home which include breakfast in the price of lodging.
Rick Steves puts it rather well, he says “B&B’s are not hotels. Think of your hosts as friendly acquaintances who have invited you to stay in their home, rather than someone you are paying to wait on you.”
Why are your two rooms so different is size and price?
We initially had one room (the upstairs room) available for B&B purposes, but a single unit would not meet the requirements of the Trip Advisor website and they would not list us. So we decided to utilise the downstairs rooms as well. It is smaller than the upstairs room and without the same facilities which is why it has a different rate.
Do you provide evening meals?
The nearest places to find an evening meal are Ballater and Braemar some eight miles along the A93 from our home. We are fairly equidistant between the two. For guests who do not wish to drive out we can provide a light supper – by arrangement – in our kitchen/diner.
Do you have WiFi and mobile/cell phone coverage?
We have complimentary WiFi available. We have mobile/cell phone coverage but it is not assured. This depends entirely upon your provider.
At what time may I check-in and at what time do I have to check-out?
Check-in is any time after 4.00pm on your day of arrival. Please let us know if you are going to arrive after 7.00pm. Entry before 4.00pm cannot be guaranteed because we need that time to undertake housework, shop or meet appointments. Check-out is by 10.30am on your day of departure.
Do you have disabled access?
Whilst all are most welcome at Copper Beech unfortunately the house may be unsuitable for those with mobility issues. There are steps at the front door, one room is upstairs and the other is quite small.
Do you allow smoking and do you accept dogs?
We do not permit smoking anywhere inside the house. We do not consent to dogs because our cat Lulu was attacked by one in her early years. She bears the physical and mental scars to this day.
Does your home have air conditioning?
Very few homes in the United Kingdom have this.
May I put items in your fridge for storage?
Yes of course.
Will you wash some clothes for me?
Yes we can wash and dry some clothes for you and to facilitate both please speak with us as soon as you have checked in. There will be no charge for this service which is done entirely at your own risk, but a donation to the Deeside Branch of Cats Protection would be appreciated.
Are midges a problem in the Royal Deeside area?
There are more than 30 species of midge in Scotland but it is the female Culicoides impunctatus variety which causes the torment. Whilst there are biting insects in this area they are not as vicious as those elsewhere in the country. It is said that Queen Victoria and Prince Albert purchased nearby Balmoral Castle because it did not have the midge problem they experienced in other areas of Scotland.

I am a light sleeper, how close to the main road are you?
Trees and another property are between us and the A93 and our home is fairly well screened from traffic noise. However our upstairs room does have Velux windows installed above the bed and there will be unavoidable noise from this should heavy rain fall onto the glass. The room was converted from unused roof space by a previous owner of Copper Beech and not by us.
Should I leave you a tip?
The custom of tipping is not as common in the UK as it is in the US and other parts of the world. It is not necessary for you to leave us a tip, or hostess gift. Copper Beech is a husband and wife run B&B and we do not employ any staff. If you are happy with the standard of service received and wish to show your appreciation then a donation to the Deeside Branch of Cats Protection, a local charity we support by fundraising and voluntary work, would be appreciated. A collection box is situated in the hallway. Otherwise simply recommend us to your family and friends.
